If you ever make it to Orvieto look up a little place called Trattoria La Grotta on Via Luca Signorelli. There are no English menus or tourists here but its full of locals who all seem to be regulars. They serve an unforgettable ravioli con tartufi neri (ravioli with black truffles). I chased this little number with their piatto di giorno (daily special), vitello e caricofa (veal and artichokes), washed down with a glass of fine Umbrian red. After you’ve paid the bill and you start to come to terms with the dining experience being over and you feel a little sad, the waiter offers you a little hit of Limoncello or Grappa. “Limoncello per favour”. I love that.
